I’m not sure why he feels the need to repeatedly signal the fact he’s Korean (Ah-ram-bae!) when he’s trying so hard to be black... or something. Actually I have some ideas - but it’s hard to articulate.

I think it’s just easy to fall into that speaking style if your flow style is fresh, as I’m told the kids say. Also Koreans tend to be pretty proud of their culture... or you can be in the minority of that group and be secretly ashamed of all the chest thumping....

I was sort of hinting that the “trying hard to be black” figuratively speaking is, in some circles, a way that one can be distinctly Korean, because if one is young and Korean the best way to be Korean is to be cool because Koreanness is embodied in outstanding coolness, and stereotype American black culture is cool, and...

I dunno, it gets confusing sometimes.

I hear you. One of my relatives circumvented all of that, and her black friends pretty much are convinced she is actually black, now, and everyone seems pretty happy with it. So I’m not really sure either.

I’m not Korean myself, per se, but my dad (a cracker) grew up in SK and speaks fluently (Jeollanam-do accent), I’ve got Korean mixed-race relatives, and I’ve been to SK and have been around a lot of Koreans in my time.

You’d be more Korean than me, then. Most of the time if I don’t look in a mirror I forget I’m not white.

Heh. I’ve always meant to actually properly learn Korean, but my vocabulary is crap, so beyond being able to read Hangul I’m functionally useless in a real Korean setting. I *am* going to hit up H-mart when I’m in Atlanta this week, though. I’m going to be cooking for friends, and I love me some kimchi, bulgogi and yaki-mandu...

I’m a 6'2"ish light-haired chunky white dude, so I look about as Korean as John Wayne looks Mongolian, but there’s some culture there.

It’s cool, man, you just keep on doing you. And even my stupid faux white trash self doesn’t fuck with the awesome that is Korean food.

It’s actually amazing how easy it is to be a redneck. I even know black mountain folk and rednecks. Also, anybody who fails to culturally appropriate bulgogi is a fool.
